“Carouge, Thread by Thread”

The study is structured in three “acts”:
I. The Diagnosis, II. The Concept, and III. The Preliminary Projects.

The objective of the Lighting Master Plan is twofold:

  • To accompany the territory of Carouge in full transformation (numerous urban projects, of all scales and with varying timelines).

  • To recompose (“re-weave”) the nocturnal territory, highlighting its particularities: both historical, with the 18th-century “new town,” and contemporary/future, with the new developments.

The principle of “re-composition” is to work through overlapping “layers”:

  • The layer of “distant” landmarks – Distinguishing Carouge by its skyline

  • The “heritage” landmarks layer

  • The layer of “nearby” landmarks – Weaving connections between neighborhoods

  • The “background” layer: public lighting – Treating the background in an equitable way

The study was also enriched by two participatory approaches:

  • An exploratory night walk in May 2014

  • A full-scale test of luminaires installed along the pedestrian mall of the Promenades in September 2014, lasting one year, with public consultation

As part of the Lighting Master Plan, an artistic competition was launched by the municipal council in 2015. It was won by two visual artists: Sara de Gouy and Victor Vieillard. “Drôle de Faune” (“Funny Fauna”), their project, consists of projecting images of animals potentially present in the Geneva area onto the city’s walls and pavements.
